Sneakersnstuff Mix Series 001: Alia Loren

Hot of the back of our shoot with Alia Loren last week for the Nike Air Max 1 Ultra Flyknit, comes the first in a series of Sneakersnstuff Mixtapes and who better to kick of the series than Alia herself. A Resident at London’s Radar Radio she provides sounds that are at the forefront of the underground. With her ears to the ground this 25 mix will get you ready for the weekend. We took 5mins with her to get the low down who she is rating, radio and the new blood out there shaking things up.

When did you start to care about music ?

I’ve always cared about music to be honest, I’ve been into a lot of different music genres from when I was in school. I used to listen to Biggie a lot when I was younger but have been into loads of different genres. Rap, hip hop, techno, dubstep, grime; I’ve had stages where I listened to them all which is why I like to drop in so many different sounds to switch it up.

When did you start to DJ and start on the radio ?

I started radio training with a youth station called Reprezent early last year. I was the only one from my group going to shadow shows like every day and they ended up having me cover people’s shows to then give me my own one. After two months, I got picked up from Gavin at Radar who offered to give me my own grime show and it all went up from there really. I was practicing DJing throughout but properly started practicing late last year. I had my first booking with Novelist, Cadell, Vision Crew and more last December.

Radio seems exciting again with a wave of new, online stations, did you grow up listening to the radio?

Radio is really exciting right now, I didn’t even grow up listening to it that much you know. I have two friends Rebecca Judd on Westside and Dobby on Reprezent who both inspired me to get into radio. I saw they had so much passion for music like I did and thought I’d give it a go and since then I’ve been in love with it, so I’ve always got to big them up. It’s sick to see how many radio stations there are and how many different genres that people are into. It shows how massive the spectrum is in music when it comes to different sounds and each station has they’re own story of their come up which is really cool too.

Who are you rating at the moment ?

It’s hard to pick because so many artists and producers are bringing out sick music. For producers it would have to be Grandmixxer, Defiant, Mischief and Mistakay. As for MC’s it would be Jon E Clayface, Nico Lindsay and Tuckz.

Dream radio guest ?

Dream radio guest would be either Wiley, Skepta or D Double E. I’d love to interview them all.

What do you think to all the new blood and the youth taking over at the moment ?

I think it’s sick to see, especially everyone’s come up, from going radio every day to get themselves known to having their own managers, booking agents etc. There’s so many talented artists in the younger generation and their supporters are really backing them. We need them to keep the genre going and they’re pushing the sound forward a lot.
