When it comes to sneaker holidays, marking your calendar at the end of March is always a good choice. Air Max Day on March 26th is something like Christmas for sneakerheads and has, over the years, been a staple for quality releases and surprise drops from Nike; expanding now almost over the whole month of March, the Swoosh doesn’t hold back when it comes to hyping up the iconic cushioning system and retro running shoe.

Why March 26th? Not just because it’s also SNS’ birthday, no, but because the first-ever Air Max was released on March 26th, 1987. Established in 2015 for the debut of the Air Max Zero, an early sneaker sketch by Tinker Hatfield before the AM1 was even released, Air Max day continues to be a yearly landmark for trainer fans, and with AMD slowly creeping up, SNS takes a look at some of the most coveted releases on Air Max Day.

In 2016/2017, Nike invited 12 creatives to design the future of Air, a contest whose winner shoe would be released on Air Max Day 2018.  The so-called “Revolutionairs” had some of the most head-turning shoe creations, and the winner, Sean Wotherspoon, had the final say. Blending the upper of the Air Max 97 and the midsole of the Air Max 1, Sean introduced his Nike Air Max 1/97 with a multicolored corduroy upper inspired by his love for vintage Nike.

“I wanted as many opinions as possible. I tried to bring together people who represent different types of sneakerheads, collectors, consumers, and styles.”
